Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, which means your body cannot synthesize and store it. We must get it from food, including citrus fruits, broccoli and tomatoes.
You need vitamin C for tissue growth and repair in all parts of the body.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant, along with vitamin E, beta-carotene and many other plant nutrients. Antioxidants block some of the damage caused by free radicals, substances that damage DNA.
Severe vitamin C deficiency is now rare, although evidence suggests that many people may have low levels. Cigarette smoking reduces the amount of vitamin C in the body, thus smokers are at risk for deficiency.
Signs of vitamin C deficiency include dryness and splitting hair; gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and bleeding gums; rough, dry, flaky skin; long healing of wounds and bruising of the skin; nosebleeds; and decreased ability to resist infection. A severe form of vitamin C deficiency is scurvy. For more detailed advice, you can contact the manager at the Biotus website.
