Black elderberry is a very useful plant containing rutin, sambunigrin glycoside, essential oil, organic acids, carotene, ascorbic acid (up to 49 mg%) and other substances. Black elderberry has diaphoretic, diuretic, astringent properties, is used in liver disease as a choleretic agent, as an anti-inflammatory in diseases of the upper respiratory tract.
