Selenomethionine, an organic form of selenium, is a highly absorbable form of this essential mineral. Selenium functions as an integral part of glutathione peroxidase, an important antioxidant enzyme, and is required for normal thyroid function. The antioxidant activity of Selenomethionine is due to its ability to deplete reactive oxygen species. Selenium and methionine also play separate roles in the formation and recycling of glutathione, a key endogenous antioxidant in many organisms, including humans.
