Butyrate is one of the three most abundant short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by anaerobic bacterial polysaccharide/fiber fermentation in the colon, where it serves as an energy source for epithelial cells. It also promotes the process of proliferation, differentiation and renewal of colonocytes. In a four-week study comparing the standard American low-fiber diet with a high-fiber diet high in resistant starch from potato and wheat bran concentrated in the hemicellulose fiber arabinoxylan, levels of butyrate, acetate, and other SCFAs increased significantly, as did levels of epithelial mucin 2 (MUC2) and occludin tight junction protein. In a 30-day, 50-person trial, 1g of butyrate promoted healthy GI motility and abdominal comfort, as well as a reduction in bloating in 68% of patients. Because butyrate is normally produced in the colon, oral butyrate salts have a poor taste and are easily degraded by stomach acid, preventing delivery to the colon. SunButyrate, triglyceride, contains a light and palatable unique sunflower oil in triglyceride form, designed to protect butyrate from degradation in the stomach and upper GI tract. In vitro tests show only 6-8% breakdown in the stomach compared to 70% with other forms, while retaining >90% breakdown in the gut.
