Methyl folate is a more active form of folic acid (vitamin B9). Folate is especially important for pregnant and reproductive-aged women because it is needed to reduce the risk of birth defects such as NTDs (malformation of the ovary) and other abnormalities. Methyl folate may be a preferred choice for people with genetic mutations that alter the function of the MTHFR enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for converting dietary folate and folic acid into methylfolate. Methyl folate is the biologically active, naturally occurring form of folate. Methyl folate is used for basic body functions: cell division and neurotransmitter synthesis. Folate of the Fourth Generation is a water-soluble vitamin B9 that is essential for the growth and development of the circulatory and immune systems. Foods that contain large amounts of folic acid are leafy vegetables (spinach, broccoli, lettuce), fruits (bananas, melons, lemons), asparagus, beans, yeast, mushrooms, meat (beef liver and kidneys), orange and tomato juice.
